These are just some of the every day advice your friends or family members might give you during the holiday season. Everyone has a story to tell about how they avoided the flu or got sick by drinking too much eggnog, and while these kinds of anecdotes are fun to hear, is there any truth in them?

MYTH 1: “If I skip a meal or two before the party, I can eat whatever I want and I won’t consume as many calories by the end of the day.”
Starving yourself is never a good idea, whether you have a party to attend or not. When you’re hungry, you’re more likely to overeat, which will increase the number of calories you consume in one day. It, actually, becomes the opposite of healthy eating.
A bit of moderation goes a long way with holiday eating, so setting your boundaries beforehand and eating a well-rounded meal can make sure you don’t overeat. Try making a commitment to pick up something at the veggie tray every time you go to eat a crinkle cookie. Instead of drinking sugary punches, try some of the many flavored, sparkling waters at your grocery store. Most importantly, don’t deny your body the nourishment it needs, and make sure you get plenty of nutrients before the party.
MYTH 2: “I’m in good shape, I don’t have to worry about getting plump over the holidays.”
Being fit and healthy before the holiday season is great! But that doesn’t mean you get a free pass to eat a whole honey-baked ham by yourself and laze around for a week. A fit body, just like any other body, will feel the effects of inactivity and overeating. A high metabolism can weather one day or two of celebrations, but if your holiday season is a month of parties and toasts, you might need to be watchful of yourself.
Try getting on the home elliptical or treadmill while you watch your favorite holiday movie, or go on some walks in the refreshing winter weather. A little bit of activity can help your body maintain its active habits in between the family feasts and friendly cocktails.
MYTH 3: “I just ate too much, that’s why I have such bad heartburn.”
There’s no denying that heartburn can happen after a big holiday dinner, but it is important to be mindful of when your heart is actually something more. Heart attacks are on the rise during the holiday season, statistically peaking on Christmas, and sometimes their symptoms can feel a lot like severe heartburn.
